PIRATES TOP AFTER CLOSE CONTEST

POOLE moved to the top of the Cab Direct Championship but were made to sweat by Redcar before recording a 47-43 victory.

The Pirates found themselves six points down after a strong start for the Bears at Wimborne Road, and after turning things around to hold a six-point lead themselves, a broken chain for Richard Lawson when leading Heat 13 helped set up a last-heat decider.

In that race, Tom Brennan and Lawson secured a 4-2 to see the home side to victory, Brennan completing a 13-point haul with Lawson scoring 10.

Jason Edwards kept up his impressive form for the Bears, collecting 12 points, with Charles Wright picking up 11.

Brennan said: “We had a plan going into that last race and we had everything set up pretty good.

“Obviously the nerves were there but at the end of the day, everyone came together and we managed to get that win.

“I want to give a really big up for Rich tonight, he was absolutely phenomenal and didn’t deserve to drop any points, but unfortunately that is how speedway goes and I am just happy for the team as we managed to get the job done.”
