WOLVES BOOSTED BY FAN REACTION

WOLVERHAMPTON owner Chris Van Straaten has been boosted by the response of loyal fans following the heart-breaking abandonment of the club’s first meeting in 20 months.

Monday’s eagerly awaited ‘Thank You NHS’ individual meeting was called to a halt after Heat 2 because riders were struggling following heavy rain in the build-up – after extensive work to get the sport re-opened at Monmore.

Van Straaten said: “I went to open club emails and check on social media first thing on Tuesday fearing what I was going to read.

“However, most of the messages have been supportive and some fans have offered to donate their refund to the club which is a remarkable gesture.

“It’s lifted my spirits and I’m starting to look ahead to Monday and our home meeting with Belle Vue. Tickets are now on sale.

“When the damage to the track became apparent, I didn’t even call the referee, I just pulled the plug myself. It wasn’t proper speedway, and I wasn’t prepared to give that to our public, it wasn’t fair.”
