BEARS LEAVE IT LATE

REDCAR produced a big finish to edge out Scunthorpe 48-42 in another tremendous Cab Direct Championship clash at the ECCO Arena.

The Scorpions led by two points with two races to go, but the Bears hit back with 5-1s in Heats 14 and 15, although their visitors did go home with the aggregate point.

A draw was still possible from the gate in Heat 15 when Scunthorpe held a 4-2, but Charles Wright passed Jake Allen for third place and then race leader Ryan Douglas suffered a puncture as Redcar took a maximum advantage.

Wright scored 13 for the Bears with Erik Riss impressing on 11+2, whilst Scorpions reserve Connor Mountain piled up 14+1, with Allen (11+2) and Douglas (11) also in the major points.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “Our main objective from tonight was the aggregate point, and we picked that up.

“Of course, there was a slight disappointment that we didn’t win the meeting, after we were leading after 13 races. But we can’t complain because the lads gave it everything.

“We’ll take the positives. Connor had another terrific meeting from reserve, and we pushed Redcar all the way. That’s the second time this season we’ve taken an aggregate point from them, and whenever you do that, you outscore the other team over the two meetings.”
