PREVIEW: JAY CARTMELL MEMORIAL, WORKINGTON

WORKINGTON take a break from Championship action with the second running of the Jay Cartmell Memorial at the GT Tyres Arena today (3pm).

The meeting is staged in honour of the eight-year-old speedway fan who had aimed to go on and compete in the sport but tragically lost his life in a shooting accident on a farm in 2024.

Several European newcomers have made the trip to Cumbria as they look to impress for possible future team places, whilst Redcar’s Charles Wright makes his return after being sidelined for three months following a crash on the opening night of the season.

Workington promoter Andrew Bain said: “Jay was a huge speedway fan and his favourite place was here at Northside watching the Comets.

“His mum and dad, Leigha and James, came to us last year with the idea for the meeting, which was a big success, and we are more than happy to run it again.

“It will be another four-team tournament format featuring some interesting riders from Scandinavia. They are all very keen to put themselves in the shop window for next season so we should see some good, competitive racing.”
