AUSSIE GOLD IN WARSAW

BELLE Vue skipper Brady Kurtz led Australia to their first Speedway World Cup gold since 2002 as they raced to victory in Warsaw on Saturday.

Kurtz top scored with 11 points as his nation finished eight points ahead of Denmark having made a whirlwind start to the meeting with wins in each of the first four races.

With his Aces team-mate Jason Doyle (10), Leicester’s Ryan Douglas (10) and King’s Lynn’s Max Fricke (7) completing the on-track quartet, and managed by Belle Vue boss Mark Lemon, it was a memorable night for the nation as they ended Poland’s domination of the now three-yearly event.

Kurtz said: “When I saw the boys come running out after we won, I was pumped. It was something really special.

“I am so happy to be a part of it. I feel like it has been such a long wait for me to be a part of an SWC team. To get this across the line is pretty cool.”

The hosts were third, one point behind Denmark, with a battling Great Britain side six points adrift of that on 23, with Robert Lambert piling up 14 points. Charles Wright scored five, Adam Ellis three and Leon Flint one as GB still gave a good account of themselves despite the injury absence of Dan Bewley.
