MORRIS: BACK THE BRITISH FINAL!

PREMIERSHIP CEO Phil Morris says this Saturday’s Cab Direct British Final at Belle Vue is a massive opportunity for the sport to project itself to a mainstream audience.

Morris is urging all supporters to get behind the event, which will be broadcast live from the National Speedway Stadium on ITV4 and ITVX from 7pm.

It’s the first time in four decades that a British Speedway event has attracted full free-to-air coverage, and Morris says everyone can play their part in making it a success.

He said: “This is one of the best news stories we’ve had for a long time, and we need the fans to get behind this.

“If everyone can share and watch it, that would be great. Even if you come to Manchester, watch it the next day on ITVX.

“This is the one time the fans can help British speedway and they can do it without spending any money.

“That’s aside from those at the National Speedway Stadium – we would like to have a massive crowd there. The more people there, the better.

“It looks like it’s going to be good weather in the middle of the summer, and we’ve put it on a Saturday night because we know the fans want that.

“ITV was really positive about the collaboration with British Speedway, and long may that continue. I think we have to be really honoured to be linked with ITV as a brand.

“There are benefits to both sides. From their side, they will get a great racing event and hopefully it will reignite some fans from the past that may remember riders or teams or may have watched speedway on World of Sport. We are opening the sport to a different world and a new generation.”
