MONARCHS MAINTAIN THIRD

EDINBURGH raced to a 55-35 win over Workington in the Cab Direct Championship – and a win in today’s (Saturday, 6pm) return in Cumbria will secure their play-off place.

The Monarchs hit the Comets with 5-1s in Heats 4 and 5 to open up an early ten-point lead and they controlled the meeting with a solid team performance.

Justin Sedgmen and Kye Thomson both scored 11+2 for the home side, who moved 20 points clear and will expect to take at least the aggregate point at the GT Tyres Arena.
The Comets’ scoring was dominated by two riders with Troy Batchelor (15) and Jacob Hook (13) scoring all but seven of their points, and Jye Etheridge was withdrawn after a first-ride fall.

Sedgmen said: “I think all of the boys did their bit tonight, including myself. Twenty points is great, but the bonus is ours to lose so we’ve got to hit them hard tomorrow.

“I thought one or two decisions might have gone our way, there were restarts and the bikes were starting to get a little worn out. I had to sort my clutches out, it was hard work but the end result was a good one.

“It’s good to rock up with everyone there which we didn’t have during the week, and the seven of us do ride well together.”

Workington boss James Denham said: “Saturday’s home meeting at the GT Tyres Arena is a big one for us – we always get that extra lift from our supporters and we’ll be looking to make the most of it.

“We just need everyone to step up and now is when it matters.”
