COMETS OFF THE MARK

WORKINGTON kicked off their Cab Direct Championship schedule with a 51-39 win over Plymouth – despite an unstoppable showing from Gladiators No.1 Nicolai Klindt.

The Dane, who was a treble winner with the Comets at their former Derwent Park home in 2018, raced to a classy 18-point maximum at the GT Tyres Arena.

But his side were unable to build on an early four-point lead as Workington turned the meeting around with back-to-back 5-1s in Heats 6 and 7 before pushing on to win the meeting.

Antti Vuolas and reserve Jacob Hook both scored 10+2 for the Comets whilst Klindt’s best support for the visitors came from Lasse Fredriksen with seven.

Comets boss James Denham said: “I’m proud of the guys, all seven of them, they rode phenomenal.

“Jonatan Grahn (8+1) was brilliant, what a guest – he flew round here and really helped us out and thanks to him. If Jacob can fire like that all year then watch out, he was fantastic today.

“When Nicolai gets fresh air you struggle to catch him, he knows where to ride and fair play to him, he’s a nice guy and he deserved that today. Nobody could touch him although our guys tried hard!”
