BANDITS EDGE OUT BEARS

BERWICK recovered from an early six-point deficit to record a vital 48-42 Cab Direct Championship victory over Redcar at Shielfield Park.

The Bandits went into the meeting without Craig Cook, who pulled out on the day due to Covid, but the Bears lost heat-leader Danny King with a wrist injury after he crashed in his opening ride.

Berwick star Drew Kemp reeled off four straight wins and finished with 13+1 after conceding a 5-1 in Heat 1 whilst guest Kyle Howarth gave a strong display to score 14+1 as the home side clinched the win with a 4-2 from Kemp and Jack Smith in Heat 14.

Charles Wright won four of his five rides for the Bears to finish on 14, with his best support coming from guest Simon Lambert on nine.

Berwick boss Stewart Dickson said: “It was a tough, bruising night of Championship racing , and it was a big night for us.

“We wanted to win, there are a lot of teams beating each other at the moment and some strange results going on, so we just need to keep winning our home matches and the rest will take care of itself.

“Kyle came in and did a really good job for us. Sometimes you don’t know what you’re going to get from a guest, but I know Kyle from Leicester!”

Bears manager Gavin Parr said: “No excuses, we just simply weren’t good enough. We lost Danny early on, but at the end of the day we were beaten by the better side, and they showed their determination on the night.”
