CHARGERS CHARGE CLEAR

OXFORD enjoyed a big day in the race for the WSRA National Development League title with a maximum haul against rivals Leicester.

The Chargers are now four points clear at the top of the table after winning a Super Heat at the Hydroscand Arena, Beaumont Park following a dramatic 44-44 draw, before they then secured a 55-35 home win over a depleted Lion Cubs side at Cowley.

The first match turned on a Heat 9 incident at Leicester when Lion Cubs team-mates Sonny Springer and Max Perry were both ruled out after colliding and crashing heavily, with the Chargers then pulling off a superb late comeback to draw the meeting with a 5-1 in Heat 15.

They took the Super Heat as Darryl Ritchings and Jody Scott were second and third as Leicester’s Cooper Rushen fell at the end of lap two, which limited the hosts to just one league point.

Then Scott scored a 15-point maximum at home in a comfortable victory, with Ritchings adding to his 13+2 haul at Leicester with 11+2 at Oxford. For the Lion Cubs, 15-year-old Rushen signed off his stint at reserve with 18+1 at home and 17 away.

Scott said: “We wanted to win at both tracks today and we made it happen. We’re now leading the league table and it’s looking promising for us. We would like to regain the WSRA National League title by the end of the year.

“There’s a fabulous team spirit and everyone gets on and we help each other out – it’s working for us.”

Leicester manager Jen Crossland said: “We can’t fault anyone for effort, it was just a really tough day and obviously the big crash at Leicester had a big impact on things.

“It was just good to see the riders walk away, although Max hurt his elbow and was battered and bruised, and Sonny had a nasty gash to his leg, and as we knew before the weekend sadly he’s now stepped down.”
