LATE DRAMA AT MONMORE

WOLVERHAMPTON snatched a dramatic Super Heat victory over Leicester after a 45-45 draw at Monmore Green.

The new-look Lions looked set to take an away win when they led by eight points after Heat 9 but Wolves hit back strongly and levelled the scores in Heat 15.

But the ultimate decider looked to be heading the visitors’ way as Max Fricke and Richie Worrall held second and third places – only for Fricke to crash on the very last bend enabling Rory Schlein to come through.

Both sides therefore went away with two points as the Lions received a point for the ‘draw’ and also took the aggregate point.

Schelin top-scored for the hosts with 11 and Sam Masters scored nine, whilst Fricke notched 11 for a solid Lions side and Richie Worrall picked up eight on his debut.

Wolves boss Peter Adams said: “It was nip and tuck all the way and yet again we managed to get over the line in the finish with one of these Super Heats.

“So I was very pleased that we got our two points but I feel that Leicester were very good value, I thought they were at least worth the point from the night that they went home with.

“Overall, I thought it was a great advert for the sport.”

Lions manager Stewart Dickson said: “Wolves came back into it and when they got gates one and three in the Super Heat, they were certainly advantageous over two and four for most of the meeting.

“We were in the right place with 30 yards or so to go and then disaster struck when Max hit a bit on the track – but the most important thing is that he’s ok.

“They came back and got their reward, they got the draw but we’ve also got two points in our pocket to take back to Leicester – and that’s quite important considering Ipswich won away at Peterborough.”
