MORT’S MISSION LATEST

THE intrepid trio of Chris Morton, John Curtis and Derek Richardson are now nearing the end of their epic ride, from Cardiff to Wroclaw to raise funds for the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund.

Anyone following the progress on Jackie Morton’s Facebook will know how tough it has been.

They will arrive at Wroclaw just before the start of Saturday’s Grand Prix and will be joined for the closing stages by five times World Champion Ove Fundin, flying in from Sweden, and former rider and Poland team manager Marek Cieslak.

More speedway personalities have been moved to send messages to the trio, and SRBF Chairman Paul Ackroyd encourages Speedway Fans everywhere to get behind them and push towards the target of £15,000 raised. “We have all been humbled by what the boys have done in the last fortnight, I know it has not been easy at all. You will get a great reception when you ride into Wroclaw Stadium at 6:30 on Saturday.”

World title contender FREDRIK LINDGREN said “Hi boys, good luck on your trip from Cardiff to Wroclaw on the old pushbikes. Great effort guys hope everything goes as good as it can – well done!”

Former Scottish star and Ben Fund trustee KENNY McKINNA added “You are playing an absolute blinder! Massive thanks to you from the Ben Fund, the advertising and publicity you are creating not just in Britain but worldwide is great. I will have a wee dram for you on Saturday night when you reach Wroclaw!”

British Finalist GARRY STEAD, injured in 2007, sent this: “Absolutely awesome job, I’m sure that when you get to Wroclaw and into the Stadium you are going to get the biggest applause. I’d like to thank you for doing this and everyone for putting money into it. Keep on pedalling!”

NEIL HEWITT, injured riding for Edinburgh in 1997, had his two children with him as he said “A big thank you from me. Can’t believe what you are doing, amazing challenge. Hope you get there and have a rest!”

GRAHAM MILES, injured more than 50 years ago and subsequently president of the Speedway Riders Association, said from his garden “”I just want to say how proud I am of you boys for doing what you are doing. Your epic bike ride is amazing, I can’t believe the distance and length of time it’s taking. The Speedway Ben Find helps us injured riders through so much and it is thanks to you and people like you who do so much – thank you.

Former Grand Prix rider DAVID NORRIS, also a very popular speedway commentator, said “I’m humbly appreciating what you do for everyone in our beloved sport, it means a lot. Keep the feet moisturisied and keep the speedway spirit going, so much appreciated, I’m proud of you guys.”
