MORT’S MISSION LATEST
SPEEDWAY heroes Chris Morton, John Curtis and Derek Richardson are now well in to the second week of their monumental bicycle ride from Cardiff to Wroclaw, beginning and ending on the days of the Grand Prix meetings.
3 lads, 3 pushbikes, 80 miles a day, 14 days! All in aid of Fundraising for the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund with a target to raise £15,000.
Chris Morton’s wife Jackie is posting daily updates on her Facebook page and the ride seems to get more gruelling every day, with some really tough terrain facing them in the second week. Jackie posted for Monday’s task “Day 9 Itinerary. Alsfeld to Gotha, few big climbs for the guys tomorrow 85 miles. You’ve got this guys, pace yourselves.”
Speedway stars, some who have had crucial help from the Ben Fund after injuries, have been sending their messages for Jackie’s page.
RICKY ASHWORTH messaged “Mort, Derek and John, I’d just like to say on behalf of the Ben Fund, thank you for what you are doing. Well done it’s a massive achievement if you pull it off. The Ben Fund has been fantastic for me, well done and good luck.”
Former World Champion JASON DOYLE said “You boys are pretty brave to be riding all the way to Poland. Hopefully not on the Autobahn! Great effort, helping us injured riders, Ben Fund means a lot to us guys.I’ve had a lot of help with physiotherapy and every day life. Hopefully you have a safe journey, us boys really do appreciate it.”
SCOTT NICHOLLS added “It’s a big challenge for you boys but it is something to be super-proud of when you reach Wroclaw. I hope you enjoy the ride.”
Recently injured Aussie TATE ZISCHE said “The Ben Fund is unreal and it does a lot for injured riders. For me it helped mum get over here. Good luck to John, Chris and Derek.”
CHRIS ‘BOMBER’ HARRIS said “Keep up the good work, keep pushing hard, you’re doing it for our boys! Hats off to you, keep pushing!”
Another ex-World Champion GARY HAVELOCK remembered how hard it was on the German hills even in a van! “You lunatics riding bicycles from Cardiff to Wroclaw! I remember these hills! Mort you were a winner on the track and I’m sure you’ll be a winner on this ride. What a fantastic thing to do it for, the Ben Fund. I’ve personally had a lot of help from the Ben Fund, funding operations for me, so it’s fantastic what you are doing.”
On behalf of the Benevolent Fund Paul Ackroyd responded “We are very proud and privileged to have three retired riders giving so much in time and effort for our Charity. A truly British Bulldog Spirit.”
