COMETS PLANNING BONANZA SPECIAL

WORKINGTON co-promoter Steve Lawson sees the club’s staging of the 2024 Ben Fund Bonanza as a hugely positive way to start a big year.

The Comets have moved up to Championship level after a successful relaunch campaign at Northside, and a high-quality line-up is expected for the traditional fund-raising event on Saturday March 16 (2pm).

Lawson said: “The timing of this as we move into the Championship, I just think will kick us off. We’re not going to top that, are we?  I think it will put us on the map.

“We don’t know what the line-up will be, but it would be awesome to see some of the big names around Workington.

“The money that the Ben Fund has paid out to riders has been a godsend to a lot of them. They’ve been in need at certain times. I was delighted when Paul (Ackroyd) came to us and suggested running the Bonanza here.

“Some of the big name riders like to get a couple of meetings in the UK early on to get on the pace again. We might get things like that happening, some real big name riders.

“Workington fans have never had the top league riders really, right back from 1970, so it will be something. I’m looking forward to it!”
