Report

SCUNTHORPE took a huge step towards the Championship play-offs by thrashing leaders Poole 50-34 at the Eddie Wright Raceway.

The Scorpions finished their regular schedule on 33 points and it would now take a major swing in other results to drop them out of the top six – whilst the Pirates suffered their heaviest defeat of the season and are still to confirm a top two finish.

Thomas Jorgensen scored a four-ride 12-point maximum for the hosts and reserve Simon Lambert racked up 14+2, with last-minute Poole guest Ryan Douglas (in for Rory Schlein who tested positive for Covid) scoring 10.

The meeting was abandoned after Heat 14 due to heavy rain, with the result standing.

Jorgensen said: “We have needed a result like this for a while – it was crucial that we got it today. We’re now looking very good to get into the play-offs.

“Despite the rain and the wet conditions, the track was still good. There was nice amount of dirt out there.

“You had to attack the track and be on the right place on the bends. Rob (Godfrey, promoter and track curator) did a good job in levelling it out and making sure it didn’t build up too much on the outside, so that we could continue attacking it.”

Pirates promoter Danny Ford said: “It is hard to find any positives to take from what has been our poorest performance of the season.

“We weren’t gating, and conditions were not conducive for passing, and so we paid the price. Fair play to Scunthorpe. Their boys seemed to want it more and they had all of them going.”
