Report
OXFORD held on for a dramatic 46-44 win over Leicester in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership after the Lions had threatened a comeback victory.
Rohan Tungate and Maciej Janowski both overtook Sam Masters in Heat 15 for the 3-3 the Spires needed with visiting captain Max Fricke out in front.
The Lions had recovered from 34-26 down to pile on the pressure, with the home side making several passing moves to protect their advantage.
Tungate top-scored with 13 and Janowski added 9+2 as the Spires returned to the top four in the league table, whilst Fricke racked up 14 from six rides for the Lions, who did take the aggregate point – but they drop out of the play-off places.
Janowski said: “I’m very happy that we won today, because Leicester have some very good riders in their team, so we did well to beat them.
“I’m happy to score more points for the team and I have trained hard. I’m still looking to score more points, but I helped the team today and that’s good.
“I felt good today. I felt the bike that I now have was working well. The support of the fans when they were cheering for me is really motivating and I thank them and I want to do well for them.”
Leicester boss Stewart Dickson said: “Without being disrespectful we did feel the aggregate point was probably always going to be in our pocket, and we went there looking for more than a point.
“Oxford looked the better team up until the interval, there’s no doubt about that, but we got ourselves back into it. We got together, had a team talk and we felt gates one and three were going to come into it for us.
“We weren’t really in the match for a win, and then all of a sudden we looked like we were going to steal it, but we got caught on the line a couple of times and they ended up stealing it back.”
