Report

POOLE are on the brink of a trophy treble after an emphatic 57-33 win at injury-hit Oxford in the first leg of the Cab Direct KO Cup Final.

The Pirates were in top form at Cowley as they seek to add to their Championship and BSN Series triumphs, whilst the Cheetahs were further depleted when skipper Scott Nicholls crashed out in Heat 4.

There were six 5-1s for the visitors, including two from the Richard Lawson/Tom Brennan combination in Heats 13 and 15, and reserve Vinnie Foord was involved in 5-1s in each of his opening three rides.

Lawson scored 14 points, being beaten only by Oxford No.1 Sam Masters in Heat 1, whilst Brennan added 11+2 despite the crash with Nicholls and reserve Tobias Thomsen kept up his great form with 11+1.

Pirates boss Neil Middleditch said: “For sure it was a good win for us, but I can’t stop thinking about Scotty who is good friend of mine. Seeing him suffer that injury wasn’t a great sight to be honest and I just want to wish him a speedy recovery.

“But we had a job to do tonight, and the boys went out there and put on a great show. We had two great performances from our two reserves, and I can’t tell you how pleased Toby (Tobias Thomsen) was to beat Sam Masters when they met.

“It certainly is ours to lose now and whilst I don’t think the same level of tension will be there on Wednesday when we complete the season, I am sure Oxford will still be looking to make us work for it.”
