BIRMINGHAM’S bid to reach the Championship play-offs fell just short at Glasgow on Friday – meaning Scunthorpe have been confirmed in the top six.
The Brummies needed a draw at Ashfield to squeeze in but went down 49-41 and therefore finish the season in seventh place, one point adrift of Edinburgh and the Scorpions.
Skipper Chris Harris scored 15 points from six rides with reserve Jack Thomas adding nine on his old home track, whilst Craig Cook scored 14 for the hosts and Connor Bailey picked up 10.
Harris said: “It was a shame really. The boys tried so hard, but I think the damage was done earlier in the season when we lost meetings we should have won. But that’s speedway.
“This is a tough place to come especially when the track was as slick as it was tonight. But we also had to be without Paco (Castagna) and he would have enjoyed it here. That was a blow to not have him.
“However, the boys here all did their bit, everyone chipped in with something, but it wasn’t to be.”
The result moves Glasgow into second place but that position could still come under threat when they host Leicester on Sunday, with that meeting brought forward to 3pm.
