Report

NEW-LOOK Berwick enjoyed a terrific start to the season with a 56-34 win over Workington in the first leg of the Border Trophy.

And amongst the Bandits’ debutants there was huge success for Danyon Hume who top-scored with 12 points, including a Heat 1 win over Craig Cook and Claus Vissing – and for youngster Freddy Hodder who collected 8+3 from four rides, passing Troy Batchelor to complete a 5-1 in Heat 11.

Jye Etheridge racked up 10+1 for the hosts, whilst Vissing scored 13+1 from six rides for the Comets but Cook was withdrawn with a possible thumb dislocation after a crash in Heat 5.

Hume said: “It was an enjoyable night both personally and as a team.

“Winning well is a good start to the season and I think we showed tonight that Berwick are a solid team unit and also that we mean business this season.”

The teams meet again at Northside on Sunday (3pm) in the second leg which also marks the return of senior racing to Workington.
