NEWCASTLE’S new NDL team made a dream start to the season with a 46-43 win at Armadale on Friday.

Former Edinburgh star Max Clegg held his nerve in a last-heat decider to defeat home duo Tom Woolley and Nathan Greaves and secure the Gems’ victory.

The visitors led from Heat 3 with Clegg’s 14-points supported by a solid all-round display with just four last places; whilst the Devils had three double-figure scorers including Greaves (12+1) and reserve George Rothery (12) but a 0-5 concession in Heat 8 ultimately proved costly.

Newcastle owner Rob Grant said: “It’s been an emotional night for us all, finally coming to the tapes after taking over in the winter of 2019, and at last we’re here, and with a fine win at that.

“These youngsters really rode their hearts out for the Gems cause tonight and got the win they very much deserved with a superb team spirit.”

Edinburgh promoter Alex Harkess said: “They (the Devils) had just too many last places I’m afraid, and this time George Rothery wasn’t able to cover the gaps even though he rode well again. Well done to Newcastle, a good start for Rob Grant.”
