Oxford Chargers v King’s Lynn Young Stars

OXFORD are off the mark in the WSRA National Development League thanks to a 50-40 win over King’s Lynn at Cowley.

The Chargers overturned an early four-point deficit to move ahead by the midway stage, and 5-1s in Heats 10 and 13 were crucial to their victory.

Skipper Jody Scott top-scored with 14, dropping his only point to opposite number Simon Lambert (12) in Heat 1.

But it was a night when two of the sport’s brightest young talents shone, with 16-year-old Harry Fletcher racking up 13+2 for the Chargers just hours after sitting a maths exam, whilst 15-year-old Ollie Binns won three races and scored 13 on his debut for the Young Stars.

Fletcher said: “King’s Lynn have got a tough side and they’ve got a strong rider at reserve in Ollie Binns. I grew up riding with Ollie and we’re mates. In our races tonight, I came out on top 3-1, so I was happy with that.

“Oxford is a great track and there’s great people here, and I enjoyed helping the team to a win.”

Young Stars manager Jason Pipe said: “I’m disappointed with the result, and I do think a ten-point gap was quite flattering to Oxford because they were never ten points ahead all night until the last race.

“But I do have to say I’m gutted for Ollie Binns in particular because if you have a reserve scoring 13 points away from home, you really expect to be going into a last-heat decider at the very least, and I told everyone that.”
