Scunthorpe Scorpions v Edinburgh Monarchs

SCUNTHORPE secured their Cab Direct Championship play-off place in emphatic style with a massive 61-29 win over Edinburgh at the Eddie Wright Raceway.

The Scorpions equalled the biggest score set throughout the second tier league programme this season, moving up to second position in the table in the process.

Michael Palm Toft stormed to a 15-point maximum whilst skipper Josh Pickering added 13+1, and there was a successful guest appearance for Jordan Jenkins with a four ride paid maximum (9+3).

The Monarchs provided just three race wins, two of them from Dan Thompson who top scored with ten points, and they have dropped to fourth place although their position in the play-offs is secure.

Palm Toft said: “My form is down to a practice session we had ahead of the home meeting with Workington. I wouldn’t say the bikes are perfect, but they are now working.

“It was a perfect night for the team and great to take such a large win against another team who will be in the play-offs. But we need to stay on the ball.

“Edinburgh didn’t put up the best display tonight and we steamrolled them, but we can’t get over-confident. We need to take it with a grain of salt and realise the next meeting starts at 0-0 again.”

Edinburgh boss John Campbell said: “It’s disappointing for us obviously. We were beaten by the far, far better team on the night and a much more motivated team.

“They had something to go for and perhaps we only had a win getting us second or third in the league, but that doesn’t take away from how disappointing a night it was.”
