Workington Comets v Plymouth Gladiators

PLYMOUTH pulled off the first away win in this season’s Cab Direct Championship with a tense 45-43 victory at Workington.

The Gladiators only provided five of the 15 race winners at the GT Tyres Arena, but they were the more solid outfit as they were successful on the road in the league for the first time in nearly two years.

A 5-1 from Danny King and Scott Nicholls in Heat 13 proved crucial in overturning a narrow Comets advantage, with 3-3s in the final two races proving enough as King and Nicholls kept Tate Zischke at the back of Heat 15.

King scored 10 with Nicholls on 9+3 and recent signing Anze Grmek impressed again with nine, whilst the home side had three double-figure scorers – Jonas Jeppesen and Troy Batchelor (12 each), and Zischke (10+1) but less back-up lower down the order.

Comets manager James Denham said: “It’s really disappointing. Both sides had bad luck, decisions didn’t go our way at times and didn’t go their way at times, but the better team won.

“There are no excuses. We have to dust ourselves down, look at ourselves and figure out what went wrong.”
