OXFORD opened their Cab Direct Championship campaign with a 49-41 win over Scunthorpe -despite being reduced to five riders.
Jordan Jenkins and Cameron Heeps were both withdrawn after crashes in the second half of the meeting, but the Cheetahs were able to protect an eight-point advantage through the closing stages.
The Scorpions had closed to 28-26 with a 5-1 from Jake Allen and Luke Harrison in Heat 9, but Sam Masters and guest Danyon Hume immediately hit back for the hosts in the next race.
Masters scored 13+1 from five rides for the Cheetahs and impressive reserve Mitch McDiarmid notched 11+2 from six, whilst Allen led the Scorpions’ scoring with 10+2.
Said Masters: “When you lose two riders it always makes it hard, but we dug deep to win the meeting.
“It’s nice when you’ve got a reserve going so well. Mitch is doing an awesome job and he got Heat 15 tonight, which he totally deserved.
“It was tough tonight and Scunthorpe put up a good fight. We did well to win and we’ve also got an eight-point lead for the aggregate point when we go back up there.”
