Report

WORKINGTON completed a weekend Cab Direct Championship double over Berwick to pull clear in the race for the play-offs.

The Comets defeated the Bandits 52-38 at the GT Tyres Arena, backing up their win at Shielfield Park less than 24 hours earlier, and it leaves them fourth in the table and five points clear of their nearest challengers.

Guest Erik Riss led the scoring with 13+1 as the Comets scored as a unit to overcome the loss of Claus Vissing in a Heat 6 crash.

Lewis Kerr (13+1) and Drew Kemp (12+1) dominated the Bandits’ scorechart as their league campaign came to an end.

Comets boss James Denham said: “It was a brilliant team performance, we had to dig deep with losing Claus early on.

“He has a hand injury and we hope he is not too badly hurt, but he was a loss and it always is when you lose one of your middle riders

“Antti (Vuolas) is a bit second-hand as well from his crash at Berwick on Saturday night, but he pulled through and scored a fantastic 12 points.

“That’s really boosted our play-off hopes, but we now just need to focus on when we host the rearranged Plymouth meeting in a couple of weeks and get the win there as well, which again will really put us in good stead for reaching the all-important play-offs.”
