Report

POOLE stretched their advantage at the top of the Cab Direct Championship to four points with an emphatic 53-37 win at Workington.

Tom Brennan, with 14+1, scored a paid maximum for the Pirates who completed a perfect two-day Northern tour following their victory at Glasgow the previous evening.

Brennan was well backed up by Richard Lawson who scored 12+1 and was unbeaten after conceding a 5-1 in the opening race, and with six of visitors winning at least one race, reserve Vinnie Foord included two paid wins in his 6+2 score.

It was a first home defeat in the league for the Comets, for whom Craig Cook scored 10+1 from six rides.

Brennan said: “The whole team clicked perfectly, the sun was out the whole meeting, so all in all it was a good day.

“It’s been a good tour. Having a busy weekend is always good. You are fresh on the bike and the mind’s ready, and we might be a long way from home right now but the journey back is certainly going to be a lot easier.”

Comets boss James Denham said: “The last two days have been disappointing, to not pick up any points at all, and it makes the play-offs a bit tough, but it’s still do-able.

“We’ve still got Redcar home and away next week, and Berwick, so we’ve got to give everything in those meetings and hope the teams behind us slip up. We just need to regroup next week and start again.”
