Report

WORKINGTON edged out Oxford 46-44 in a dramatic Cab Direct Championship contest at the GT Tyres Arena to go back to the top of the table.

Captain Craig Cook confirmed victory for the Comets by winning Heat 15 ahead of Scott Nicholls and Sam Masters after the Cheetahs had fought back from eight points down.

Cook scored 11+2 for the home side with Australian youngster Tate Zischke impressing once again with 10+1, whilst 16-year-old Ashton Boughen collected 11+2 at reserve for the visitors.

Masters (10+2) and Nicholls (10+1) were also in double figures, but the Cheetahs were unhappy with the disqualification of Luke Killeen from Heat 4 after a clash with Sam McGurk.

Oxford manager Peter Schroeck said: “I can’t fault the effort of any of the boys today. We pushed a very good Workington side all the way to the final race around their own track.

“We’ve put ourselves in a very good position for the aggregate point against when Workington come back at our place next month.

“I thought Luke was very unlucky in Heat 4. Sam McGurk clearly took his front wheel from under him. Everyone could see what happened.

“I did speak to the referee, because I didn’t agree with Luke’s exclusion. You can only ever put your point to the referee and move on, although that lost point was costly at the end of the meeting.”
