Report

BERWICK have moved to the top of the early Cab Direct Championship table after completing a weekend double over Redcar.

The Bandits won 47-43 at Shielfield Park on Saturday, repeating their result from the ECCO Arena 24 hours earlier to also secure the aggregate point, with their opening combination of guest Richard Lawson and Danyon Hume playing a key role.

The pair joined forces for three 5-1s with Hume notching a score of 10+1 against his former club, whilst Lawson collected 12+2 and went on to win the decisive Heat 15 when a 5-1 to the Bears would have set up a Super Heat.

Charles Wright scored 12+2 for the visitors and guest Dan Thompson added 9+1, but they remain scoreless after three league encounters.

Redcar co-promoter Jamie Swales said: “If it wasn’t for the home form we have had, we would have probably come away from tonight’s meeting quite happy as anybody can see that Berwick are one of the top teams this season and we ran them to a last heat decider.”
