SHEFFIELD are five points clear at the top of the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership after having the overall edge on Roses rivals Belle Vue on Bank Holiday Monday.
The sides fought out a classic encounter at the National Speedway Stadium at lunchtime with the Aces prevailing 48-42 in a last heat decider.
The visitors pulled back from eight points down to take it the wire with Josh Pickering (15+1) in inspired form, but Ben Cook (11+1) and Dan Bewley (12) inflicted the Australian’s first defeat of the meeting with a 5-1 in Heat 15 to secure victory for the home side.
However, the Tigers responded with an emphatic 56-34 win at Owlerton in the evening, ensuring they took the aggregate point.
Chris Holder (15), Jack Holder (12+2) and Kyle Howarth (11) were all in double figures in a powerful Sheffield performance, whilst Bewley scored 13 for Belle Vue but they were hampered by the absence of captain Brady Kurtz from the second meeting.
Tigers manager Simon Stead said: “Two meetings in one day can be a big ask, but I thought the lads dealt with it and handled things superbly.
“I thought our display at Belle Vue was pretty good because they’ve been so dominant at the National Speedway Stadium.
“But to kick on the way we did back on home shale was absolutely brilliant from the lads.
“We rocked them from the off and hit them really hard and they had no answer, it was such a great showing from the boys.”
Belle Vue boss Mark Lemon said: “We just didn’t have enough firepower early on (at Sheffield). Dan was sensational after his first couple, but you need all seven guys firing, or six tonight, and we didn’t have the depth overall.
“We realised the result was beyond us for a win and we’ve been working as a unit to try and find a better set-up, and I think we’ve got a bit closer to the mark.”
SHEFFIELD 56: Chris Holder 15, Jack Holder 12+2, Kyle Howarth 11, Josh Pickering 9+2, Jason Edwards 7+2, Joe Thompson 2, Tai Woffinden r/r.
BELLE VUE 34: Dan Bewley 13, Ben Cook 9+2, Norick Blodorn 4, Antti Vuolas 4, Jaimon Lidsey 2+2, Jake Mulford 2, Brady Kurtz r/r.
