LEICESTER kept up their march into ROWE Motor Oil Premiership title contention by ending Ipswich’s 100 per cent home record at Foxhall.
The Lions won 54-36 to make it eight matches unbeaten, with the result taking them up to third in the table and within one win of securing their play-off place.
But the Witches’ injury problems increased as they saw a 16-match home winning run come to an end, with Adam Ellis suffering mild concussion in a Heat 1 crash which reduced them to five riders on the night.
Richard Lawson top-scored for the visitors with 12+1, Luke Becker added 11+1 and skipper Max Fricke (10+2) scored a four-ride paid maximum as the Lions’ top five all struck form, whilst guest Scott Nicholls battled to 13 from six for the Witches.
Leicester manager Stewart Dickson said: “We came here at the right time, but I still thought we rode pretty well.
“We know Ipswich were pretty depleted tonight, but we can only do what we can do, there were some good performances and I’m very pleased to get the three points.
“Luke is beginning to show the form we thought we’d see when we signed him initially, and I think he’s been the catalyst over the last five or six weeks.”
Ipswich boss Ritchie Hawkins said: “It was a really tough night. It was always going to be tough but then losing Adam in the first race made it a daunting task for us all.
“The boys fought their hearts out, they were nearly in every race between them. If anything, most of them were guilty of over-riding to compensate for everything and that is something I can’t criticise at all. They gave everything for the team again and we will come again next week.
“You have got to give credit to Leicester as well, their performance was brilliant. Even with our full one to seven I think it would have been an extremely close meeting, it is a shame it wasn’t our full team as it could have been a classic.”
