Report

DEFENDING champions Sheffield have taken over at the top of the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership after a 55-35 home win over Birmingham.

The Tigers took maximum points against the bottom side and now go above Ipswich – who they travel to on Monday – following the Witches’ home defeat to Leicester.

The result also made mathematically sure the South Yorkshire side will reach the play-offs, and they did so with a strong display which saw their top four all reach at least paid double figures.

Chris Holder led the way with 14 points and brother Jack added 12+1 with Kyle Howarth on 10+1. For the Brummies, Fredrik Lindgren recovered from a last place in Heat 1 to score 13 from his next five rides.

Sheffield boss Simon Stead said: “I was really pleased to see all the lads contribute the way that they did – collectively, it was much more like it.

“It goes to show what we’re really capable of when that happens and they’re the sort of performances we’re going to need heading into the business end of the season.

“Some people might say ‘oh, but it’s only Birmingham’, but they’ve been pushing a lot of teams really, really close in recent meetings.”

Brummies manager Sam Ermolenko said: “For some reason there were some set-up problems in the pits and you can bounce around each and every one of them – even Freddie started off not getting it right and he’s got a Grand Prix coming up, as has Tom Brennan.

“Freddie ended up figuring it out, changing bikes and it worked for him. Tom has still got some teething problems and when you’ve not got your top two scoring points when you need it, the bottom guys are going to struggle.

“I think they (Sheffield) hit form because we did so terribly.”

SHEFFIELD 55: Chris Holder 14, Jack Holder 12+1, Kyle Howarth 10+1, Josh Pickering 9+2, Dan Gilkes 6+1, Jason Edwards 4, Tai Woffinden r/r.
BIRMINGHAM 35: Freddie Lindgren 13, Wiktor Lampart 7+1, Zach Cook 5+1, Tom Brennan 5, Michael Palm Toft 4, Leon Flint 1, Piotr Pawlicki r/r.
