LEICESTER boosted their play-off chances with a 53-37 win over ROWE Motor Oil Premiership leaders Ipswich on Thursday.

The Lions continued a strong run of home form with the victory against a Witches side who had an excellent previous record in the East Midlands.

Captain Max Fricke led the way with 15+1 from six rides as the hosts operated rider replacement for Ryan Douglas after a crash in Sweden in midweek, and he was backed up by Luke Becker with 12+1 and Richard Lawson with 10+1.

Emil Sayfutdinov racked up 15 for the Witches, and his personal battles with Fricke ended 2-2, but his only real support came from reserve Keynan Rew with 9+2.

Leicester boss Stewart Dickson said: “It was a very good performance, and I think we saw a team that’s beginning to grow tonight.

“That was a stiff test for us, and we were concerned because of previous results against Ipswich, so to be honest I never saw us winning by 16 points.

“There was a good energy in the pits tonight, which is always the case when you’re winning, but I felt something in the early heats, there was a determination.”

Witches manager Ritchie Hawkins said: “Tough night at the office for the boys. We fought really hard and worked our nuts off all night again.

“I certainly can’t criticise any of them for their effort. We weren’t miles off, certainly not as far off as the scoreline suggests, but the fine margins all added up.

“It wasn’t the result we asked for, but we’ll regroup and come again next week.”

LEICESTER 53: Max Fricke 15+1, Luke Becker 12+1, Richard Lawson 10+1, Sam Masters 7+2, Craig Cook 6+1, Sam Hagon 3, Ryan Douglas r/r.
IPSWICH 37: Emil Sayfutdinov 15, Keynan Rew 9+2, Danny King 4, Jordan Jenkins 3+1, Scott Nicholls 3, Adam Ellis 3, Dan Thompson r/r.
