LEICESTER moved to the top of the National Development League with a dramatic 46-44 win at Mildenhall on Sunday.
The Lion Cubs deposed the Fen Tigers thanks to a last-heat decider victory where Dan Thompson came from the back against the home side’s top two of Alfie Bowtell and Lee Complin.
Thompson racked up 16+1 from six rides as the Cubs used rider replacement for his brother Joe, whilst Bowtell (11+1) and Ben Trigger (10) led the way for the home side.
Leicester boss Dave Howard said: “Dan’s ride in Heat 15 coming from third to first was absolutely amazing, especially on a track which was uncomfortable for some today.
“The way he came round and underneath Bowtell and Complin was just outstanding to clinch the win, but everybody played their part with some good rides, and crucial rides to keep us in touch.
“It was a great performance from the whole team.”
Mildenhall manager Jason Gardner said: “It was a frustrating afternoon for sure – throwing away too many points against a predictably very solid Leicester side.
“Not looking for excuses, but after a month without a match on our home track or as a team at all, too many of our riders were race rusty and it showed.
“It’s not over of course, but we do need away wins at Kent and Edinburgh to stay in the play-off race.”
MILDENHALL 44: Alfie Bowtell 11+1, Ben Trigger 10, Lee Complin 7, Arran Butcher 5+1, Josh Warren 5, George Congreve 3+1, William Richardson 3+1.
LEICESTER 46: Dan Thompson 16+1, Ashton Boughen 8+1, Max Perry 7, Vinnie Foord 6+2, Max James 6+1, Sam Woods 3+1, Joe Thompson r/r.
