Report

OXFORD moved to the top of the NDL table with a dramatic 46-44 win in a last-heat decider at Berwick.

The Chargers completed their Northern tour with two victories, but required a 5-1 in Heat 15 from Henry Atkins (13) and Jordan Jenkins (12+1) to turn the match in their favour.

The visiting duo got the better of the previously unbeaten Connor Coles (13) after fellow Bullets rider Greg Blair had been disqualified for a first-bend fall.

Both sides were reduced to six riders as Josh Embleton and Kelsey Dugard had to withdraw after aggravating existing injuries.

Oxford boss Peter Schroeck said: “The boys showed outstanding character tonight. It was a close meeting all night, and it would’ve been easy to drop our heads going into the final race having led twice and let that advantage slip.

“But everyone did the opposite. They rallied to the cause and we’ve picked up four huge points on the road which could define our season later in the year.”

Berwick manager Kevin Little said: “The truth is that this was an exceptionally good speedway meeting and we came up just short.

“Oxford worked hard for their win but I was incredibly proud of the way that we kept battling back even when things went against us.”

BERWICK 44: Connor Coles 13, Greg Blair 10, Mason Watson 10, Danny Phillips 6, Ben Rathbone 2+1, Jamie Halder 2, Josh Embleton 1+1.
OXFORD 46: Henry Atkins 13, Jordan Jenkins 12+1, Ryan Kinsley 8, Kelsey Dugard 4+1, Jody Scott 4, Sam Woods 3+1, Jacob Clouting 2+1.
