Report

POOLE opened their Cab Direct Championship defence with a 49-41 win over Scunthorpe – despite a sensational 18-point maximum from the Scorpions’ No.1 Ryan Douglas.

The Australian was in unstoppable form as he reeled off six straight wins with the visitors giving the Pirates an awkward evening, as they led for most of the meeting until the final third of proceedings.

5-1s to the home side in Heats 10, 12 and 14 took them to victory although the result leaves the aggregate point finely poised.

With only six race wins between the Pirates, Steve Worrall top-scored with 9+2 with Ben Cook on nine, whilst Jake Allen backed up Douglas with 8+1 including two wins.

Poole boss Neil Middleditch said: “I didn’t think they were going to hit us that hard so early on. I got the boys together at the interval at Heat 11 and I told them they had to do something here, and luckily they responded and we got the win and the points, so that was the main thing.

“Dougy was outstanding, I have got to say that. Hats off to him, he was absolutely brilliant, but once again I think our strength in depth shone through. Everybody played a part.”

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “It was a very good performance from Scorpions, since Poole are such a strong team around their own circuit. We let a few points slip during the night as well – it could have been even closer.

“It was a masterful display by Ryan Douglas. It’s quite an achievement for a rider to get a 15-point-maximum, yet alone get an 18-point-maximum around a track like Poole which is such a home fortress.”
