Report

WOLVERHAMPTON maintained their unbeaten home record in 2023 with a 50-40 win over Sheffield to move up to second place in the Premiership table.

Skipper Sam Masters and Rory Schlein both scored 11+1 for the Monmore side on a night of excellent racing and overtaking.

Former Wolves man Tobiasz Musielak led the Tigers’ challenge with an exciting 14-point haul from six rides as he produced a series of good moves on his old home track.

But the visitors were without No.1 Jack Holder and captain Kyle Howarth, and Wolves proved to be the more solid side.

Schlein said: “It was a tough night and we knew it was going to be tough.

“They’d got Nick (Morris) in at No.1 who goes well around here and with someone like Lewi (Kerr) at reserve, it was never going to be easy.

“The boys battled hard, even when they got close to us, and ten points is thoroughly deserved.”

Sheffield boss Simon Stead said: “Tobi was back and looking like he’d never had an injury, Dan (Gilkes) was looking really good at a track he’s not really spent much time on, Adam (Ellis) was looking a bit more like his old self and it was another great job from Lewi (Kerr).

“Wolves is always a difficult place to come to and to keep it within ten isn’t a disaster, and it makes it an even more mouth-watering tie when we face them at Owlerton later in the season.”

WOLVERHAMPTON 50: Sam Masters 11+1, Rory Schlein 11+1, Ryan Douglas 8, Scott Nicholls 8, Steve Worrall 6, Zach Cook 4, Leon Flint 2+1.
SHEFFIELD 40: Tobiasz Musielak 14, Lewis Kerr 10+1, Nick Morris 6+1, Adam Ellis 6+1, Dan Gilkes 4, David Bellego 0, Kyle Howarth r/r.
