Report

WOLVERHAMPTON defeated Ipswich 49-41 in a tremendous Sports Insure Premiership contest at Monmore Green with two late 5-1s proving crucial.

The home side led by just four points heading into Heat 13 but Rory Schlein produced a brilliant ride to come from the back against Jason Doyle and Emil Sayfutdinov and partner Sam Masters to a 5-1.

Ryan Douglas and Zach Cook made the match safe with another Wolves 5-1 in the next race before Doyle and Sayfutdinov responded in the finale, the latter going from fourth to second, to leave the aggregate position potentially of interest when the sides meet at Foxhall next month.

Wolves skipper Masters (12) and Rory Schlein (10+1) led the way for the home side whilst Doyle racked up 14+1 for the Witches and Sayfutdinov added 9+2.

Masters said: “That was a massive effort. At the start of the night we said that if we could get a win here against that strong team we’d be happy, but that was impressive.

“I knew it was a big race (Heat 13) and I just kind of pinned my ears back and Rory was the hero of that race even though I might have won it.

“To 5-1 those guys, I don’t think that will happen too much this year. I was really happy with the boys though, everyone dug deep and did their job.”

Witches boss Ritchie Hawkins said: “I thought it was a decent performance seeing as it is early doors in the season. I come away disappointed that we didn’t get a little bit closer in a sense, but I was fairly content with our performance as a team.

“It was the first time here for Keynan (Rew) and it has been a long time since Emil has been here, and they have picked up a lot of experience which will help us later in the season.”

WOLVERHAMPTON 49: Sam Masters 12, Rory Schlein 10+1, Steve Worrall 7+2, Ryan Douglas 7, Zach Cook 5+1, Leon Flint 4+2, Craig Cook 4.
IPSWICH 41: Jason Doyle 14+1, Emil Sayfutdinov 9+2, Danny King 8, Ben Barker 4, Keynan Rew 3+2, Danyon Hume 3, Joe Thompson 0.
