MAJOR BLOW FOR BRUMMIES

BIRMINGHAM have been handed a potentially crippling blow just over a month before the start of their season.

Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium has been victim of three break-ins in as many weeks before vandals caused further serious damage to the speedway side of the venue in the early hours of Monday morning.

Essential equipment was set alight and burnt out, including several vehicles, whilst storage containers were broken into and security gates were battered down.

Co-owner Peter Mason said: “I just don’t understand what people get out of doing things like this – one thing I do know is that they don’t think about the after-effects it has on other people.

“Especially so close to the beginning of a brand-new season, it can throw a lot of things in the air. It’s all stuff that we will need, so it’s all stuff that’s got to be replaced.

“Speaking here and now, our intention is still to come to the tapes as planned and go racing on that first Wednesday night in June, and we are determined to make that happen.

“But the reality is we need to raise some much-needed funds pretty quickly, or who knows how far we can take it in the current climate especially?”
