WINNING START FOR SCORPIONS
SCUNTHORPE made a strong start to their home season with a 50-40 win over BSN Series holders Redcar at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday.
The Scorpions powered into a 14-point lead after just five races before the Bears pegged them back over the second half of the meeting to retain an interest in the aggregate point.
New skipper Josh Pickering led the way for the home side with 13+1 from five rides, dropping his only point in Heat 6 when former Scunthorpe rider Jake Allen took the first of his two race wins, and Pickering’s opening combination with the returning Nathan Ablitt (7+1) produced a 5-1 in Heat 1.
Jason Edwards scored eight from five rides for the Bears and reserve Ace Pijper chipped in with eight from four, winning his final two outings.
Ablitt said: “I felt really good today. It was the first time I’ve ridden out of reserve at this level, so I was really happy to score paid eight.
“I enjoyed racing at No 2. I had Josh with me in three of my races and we had some good races against the opposition. Riding with him – following him and learning off him – is only going to help me out. And the crowd love Josh, because he is box office.
“I had a positive meeting today and I just want to keep building. I’m happy my points contributed to a victory for the team and it gives us something to work for on Friday at Redcar.”
