SCORPIONS SECURE AWAY WIN

SCUNTHORPE got their Cab Direct Championship campaign back on track with a vital 47-42 win at Plymouth on Saturday.

The Scorpions had dropped points at home of late but began to redress the balance with an away victory which was secured by a 5-0 in Heat 15.

The visitors only led once all night and it came at the most crucial time as having pulled back from six points down, the scores were level heading into the final race.

Jake Allen and Steve Worrall were on a 5-1 when Gladiators guest Kyle Howarth fell due to a seized engine, and the re-run saw the Scorpions again up front before Alfie Bowtell crashed on the last lap.

Allen (13+1), trump card reserve Zaine Kennedy (13) and Worrall (12+2) scored the bulk of the Scorpions’ points, whilst Howarth top-scored for the Gladiators with ten.

Allen said: “We lost the coin toss and we had some tough races off gate 4 in many of the early races. But that was a blessing in disguise, since it gave us the preferred gates in the big heats at the end.

“We kept that thought in our minds and made sure we stayed in contention so that we could take advantage of that.

“In both Heats 13 and 15, I knew if I could make the start off gate 3, then Stevie would give me the room, because he’s a good rider and also a team-rider. We spoke about it before we went out. In Heat 15, we just tried to replicate what we did in Heat 13 and we managed to do so.”
