NICHOLLS TAKES WSRA AWARD
OXFORD Cheetahs skipper Scott Nicholls received recognition for a superb season when he was named Rider of the Year by the World Speedway Riders’ Association last weekend.
Nicholls continued to pile up the points at the age of 46, leading the Cowley club to two Finals at Cab Direct Championship level, although they missed out on league and KO Cup honours to Poole.
He said: “It’s a huge honour to win the Rider of the Year award. There are not many sports like speedway, where there is a huge support network existing between riders, sponsors and the fans. It is a large family.
“I had an enjoyable season, even if I ended it with a shoulder injury. You can’t beat experience, and I wish I knew what I do know when I started racing.
“I believe the Cheetahs could have gone all the way this season, barring the injuries we sustained. But that’s speedway and hats off to Poole for winning the league.”
The WSRA, who are title sponsors of British Speedway’s National Development League, also honoured Oxford boss Peter Schroeck as their Manager of the Year having taken charge of teams at all three levels of the sport without missing a single meeting.
