BRITISH YOUTH WEEKEND PREVIEW

THE 2024 British Youth Championships concludes this weekend with rounds at Edinburgh this afternoon (Saturday, 1.30pm) and tomorrow at Glasgow (2pm).

Both rounds are standalone meetings where 30 heats will take place at the Edinburgh and 36 races at Glasgow, and both events will consist of all four classes – 500cc, 250cc, 125cc and 125cc Support.

A fantastic total of 32 riders will be taking part which will include the recently crowned European 250cc Silver Medallists William Cairns, Cooper Rushen and Seth Norman, although in this competition Cairns competes in the 500cc class.

In all classes the British Championships and podium finishes are all still to be decided so across this weekend there will be three riders crowned new British Champions, plus the winner of the 125cc Support Class.

The odds are on Cairns to be crowned the British Champion in the 500cc class as he has not only won all five rounds so far but is yet to drop a point in any of his heats, and he could be crowned British Champion as early as his third heat at the Edinburgh round this afternoon this following on from his 250cc British Championship win in 2023.

The podium positions in this class looks to be between Jamie Etherington, William Hocaniuk and Stene Pijper all fighting for the Silver and Bronze medals as going into this afternoon’s round there are just four points between them.

The 250cc class is much wider open with current leader Rushen heading the chasing pack of Norman, Archie Rolph and Ollie Binns – although realistically Rushen remains the favourite to be crowned 250cc British Champion unless Norman can win both of this weekend’s rounds.

If Norman doesn’t win both rounds it is expected for him to claim the silver medal, and Rolph and Binns to be battling for the bronze.

Like Cairns in the 500cc class Oliver Bovingdon in the 125cc’s is yet to drop a point in any of his heats and is also expected to win the Championship this afternoon, and in this class again three riders will be battling it out for the silver and bronze medals with six points separating Lewis Hague, Rocco Webb and Charlie Luckman

In the 125cc Support class it is expected to be a battle between Charlie Fletcher and Tia May Brant to see who comes out on top, where Edinburgh and Glasgow local riders Rhys Harrow and Callum Hague will also be competing.

The Young Lions would like to thank the promotions of both Edinburgh and Glasgow for their continued support of British Youth Speedway in 2024, and also the members of the BSP Ltd and the British Youth Championship series sponsors:
