BRITISH YOUTH LATEST

WILLIAM Cairns took another step towards the 500cc British Youth Championship title with victory in the latest round of the series at Belle Vue on Friday.

Cairns took his third successive win but was kept on his toes by the three other NDL riders competing – Stene Pijper, William Hocaniuk and Jamie Etherington.

All four qualified for the Final, with Cairns coming out on top again, Pijper claiming the runners up spot fractionally in front of the chasing Hocaniuk, with the unlucky Etherington being disqualified in the final for exceeding the two-minute allowance having suffered an engine failure on the start line.

Lee Harrison and Billy Budd also impressed, each having a race win in the heats and there was another good performance by 14-year-old Ryan Ingram who was making his first appearance at the National Speedway Stadium.

Meanwhile history was made in the 125cc Support class with Tia May Brant becoming the first female rider to win a round of the British Youth Championship, with Jack Scully-Syer and Rhys Harrow also making the rostrum.

May Brant now is joint leader of the series after three rounds and has a genuine chance of being the first female rider to win a British Youth Championship class come the end of the series in September.

The Championship now focuses on the 250cc and 125cc classes with rounds scheduled for Plymouth, Redcar and Belle Vue later this month.
