BRITISH YOUTH LATEST

THE 2024 British Youth Championship for the 500cc and 125cc support classes finally got underway last weekend following a number of postponements and fixture changes.

Rounds were held at Redcar on Friday, alongside the Middlesborough WSRA NDL fixture versus Oxford, and then rolled over to Saturday where again the same two classes took to the track at Workington following their Cab Direct Championship clash with Poole.

Ten riders competed in the 500cc class, and for these two rounds there were five riders in the 125cc Support class.

A strong looking line up in the 500cc’s with three permanent NDL riders William Cairns of the Belle Vue Colts, Stene Pijper of the Scunthorpe/Sheffield team and Middlesborough’s William Hocaniuk, and based on the performances of Jamie Etherington who has only just moved up to the 500cc class, it will not be long before he gets a team spot in the NDL.

Other notable performances, and not far away from claiming an NDL team spot were Laylen Richadson and Ryan Ingram, although Ingram due to still only being 14 years old will not be eligible until the 2025 season.

Plenty has been spoken about William Cairns already this season, and he certainly did not disappoint again this weekend with a faultless performances over both days winning all his ten heats and claiming the top spot on the rostrum for the first two rounds of the 2024 British Youth Championship.

At both Redcar and Workington the same four riders made the Final with Cairns coming out on top at both rounds. Etherington claimed the runners-up spot also at both rounds, with Hocaniuk claiming the third spot at Redcar and Pijper replacing Hocaniuk on the rostrum at Workington.

Jack Scully-Syer, who is based on the Isle of Wight, dropped just one point at Redcar in the 125cc Support and claimed his first British Youth Championship win with Charlie Fletcher and Tia May Brant also making the rostrum.

The same three riders made the rostrum in round two; however Charlie Fletcher, who is just 11 years old, really enjoyed the conditions and rode to a five-ride maximum and never looked troubled at this round to go on and claim his first Youth Championship win, with May Brant just doing enough to claim the runners-up spot ahead of Scully-Syer.
