PREVIEW: FIM YOUTH GOLD TROPHY, WORKINGTON

WORKINGTON host the first of two major weekend events today (Saturday) with their staging of the FIM Track Racing Youth Gold Trophy.

SGP4 champion Blake Schlein is one of the star attractions at the GT Tyres Arena, with five British competitors amongst the 20-rider field.

Open to riders aged between 11 and 16 on 125cc machines, this year’s Gold Trophy has attracted riders from nine nations and two continents to the Cumbrian venue.

And there will be a new name at the top of the honour roll, with Marcel Zwierzyński leading the field as the highest placed of 2025’s returning competitors.

The talented young Pole was fourth last year despite failing to score in his opening race, and he will be determined to finish on top on Saturday.

But he will face serious opposition from riders including Jakub Hejkal from the Czech Republic and Latvia’s Hugo Polaks who claimed two heat wins apiece on their way to finishing seventh and tenth last season.

Also returning for another attempt at the title, Latvian Valters Bušs was eleventh in 2025, two places above Poland’s Marcel Pawłowski and four in front of Britain’s Fraser Buckle who leads the home contingent. 

There is a packed programme of 25 races on the agenda to decide the destination of the Gold Trophy, with admission at the GT Tyres Arena just £15 – or £25 to include Sunday’s European Youth Track Racing Cup event.
