WRIGHT GOOD START FOR SPIRES

OXFORD star Charles Wright says it’s been exactly the start required by the Spires in their first season in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership.

The Cowley club’s top-flight side have won both of their opening home matches 47-43 to sit unbeaten at the top of the very early league table.

And Wright, who suffered a heavy fall in the opener against Birmingham less than three days before his own Testimonial at Redcar, was key to the win over the Tigers with an 11-point haul.

He said: “We’ve got two wins at home and that’s what we want to keep doing. It’s about winning your home meetings and then winning away when you can.

“For the first meeting last week, the track was hit by rain and that wasn’t ideal for us, but we still won it against Birmingham and then we showed what we can do against Sheffield.

“(The Testimonial) was quite stressful. It wasn’t supposed to rain, but then it did, and we just about got it on. I had a few sleepless nights beforehand and have never slept so much since.

“I enjoyed the day but it’s good to get it out of the way and to be able to focus on my racing.”
