PREVIEW: SCUNTHORPE v POOLE (Champ KO Cup Final)

SCUNTHORPE host Poole in the first leg of the Championship KO Cup Final today (Sunday, 3pm) with the last item silverware of the season at that level up for grabs.

The teams met recently in the league play-offs with the Pirates victorious at the Eddie Wright Raceway, but the Scorpions hit back by defeating Redcar in the Cup semi-final, whilst their opponents were beaten in the league Grand Final by Glasgow.

Scunthorpe go into the Cup Final with a full-strength team whilst Poole again operate rider replacement for Anders Rowe who is sidelined after his crash at the EWR in the play-offs.

Scorpions promoter Rob Godfrey said: “Ideally we need not just to win, but also build up a lead to take to Poole for the second leg, but I’m not going to put a figure on that.

“We’ve shown twice this season that we can ride well at Poole, while our No.1 Ryan Douglas loves the place. Going to Wimborne Road doesn’t hold any fears for us, and I feel we can do whatever we need to do down there next Wednesday.

“It goes without saying that the first leg at the EWR is a huge occasion – it’s the first time since 2018 that we’ve been in a big Final like this. A big, vocal crowd cheering for the Scorpions will spur on the lads even more. I believe we’ve got the right seven lads to pull this off and win the Cup.”

Pirates reserve Kyle Newman said: “We want to put the anger and frustration the whole team felt after losing the league title into beating Scunthorpe in the Cup.

“We know it won’t be easy, they made that clear when they came here in the league play-offs and we scraped the verdict with the Super Heat.

“But then we went to their place and against all the odds fought out a ten-point victory. We need to do the same when we go there for the first leg.”

SCUNTHORPE: Ryan Douglas, Connor Mountain, Simon Lambert, Jake Allen, Michael Palm Toft, Nathan Ablitt, Drew Kemp.
POOLE: Richard Lawson, Anders Rowe r/r, Ben Cook, Zach Cook, Steve Worrall, Kyle Newman, Joe Thompson.
