LION CUBS LEAD CRASH-STREW CUP FINAL

LEICESTER are in pole position to retain the NDL Knockout Cup after a 49-38 win at Mildenhall in the first leg of the Final on Sunday.

But the meeting was marred by the withdrawal of five riders after a spate of crashes in the early stages with the Fen Tigers losing the services of No.1 Alfie Bowtell, guest Jody Scott and reserve William Richardson, whilst guest No.1 Jack Smith and reserve Vinnie Foord crashed out for the Lion Cubs.

Ashton Boughen scored a 15-point maximum for the visitors with guest Jacob Hook unbeaten on 13+2, whilst Max Perry picked up 12. George Congreve top-scored for the Fen Tigers on 11+2 with Ben Trigger on 10+1.

Leicester boss Dave Howard said: “Whilst the last couple of races went against us, we’d certainly have taken an 11-point victory before the meeting started, so we’re in a very good position heading into Saturday.

“It was a great effort by the guys on a track that was so tricky for both teams, and with both teams losing riders during the meeting.

“It’s disappointing to lose Vinnie for 12 days but thankfully everybody else will be okay for Saturday.”

Mildenhall manager Jason Gardner said: “It was a tough afternoon all round.  The track was in good condition but both teams were very unlucky with some nasty falls.

“Credit on our side goes especially to Ben and George who kept battling away and what an impressive 9+2 for Kai Ward who’s improving with each and every ride.

“We send best wishes to the injured riders and hope they aren’t out for too long. Thanks to the supporters for sticking with us on a long afternoon.”
