BANDITS WIN LEAVES SCORPIONS SWEATING
BERWICK raced to a 57-33 win over Scunthorpe at Shielfield Park – a result which keeps Redcar in with a chance of making the play-offs.
Guest Richard Lawson scored a 15-point maximum for the Bandits, and was one of four double-figure scorers with stand-in skipper Jye Etheridge racking up 15+1, whilst Jonas Knudsen scored 12+2 and Ricky Wells 11+1.
Captain Simon Lambert scored 10+1 for the Scorpions, who are now left waiting on the result of Tuesday’s Plymouth v Redcar fixture, where the Bears need one league point to regain sixth place. The result also confirms the Gladiators as play-off qualifiers.
Berwick boss Gary Flint said: “We hit our straps early and never really looked back.
“It was a dominant performance and, after demolishing Plymouth last time out, at least gives our fans a winning end to what has been a frustrating season.
“We couldn’t have had a better guest than Richard Lawson and it was also good to see Jye and Ricky back in the thick of the action.”
Lambert said: “As a club, we tried everything we could to get a guest and we down every possible avenue.
“After that, the six of us gave our all, and Connor’s (Mountain) come in and done a good job for Tero (Aarnio), but it wasn’t meant to be.
“The damage was done on Redcar on Friday night when we lost after leading all the way – that was sickening and heart-breaking and I don’t think many of us slept too much last night. It’s now out of our hands, and we can only hope that Plymouth stop Redcar scoring on Tuesday night.”
