MONARCHS PEGGED TO FOUR

EDINBURGH were held to a narrow 47-43 win by battling Newcastle in the first leg of their KO Cup tie at Armadale.

Richie Worrall (15) and Sam Masters (13+2) both recorded maximums for the Monarchs, and their lead at the end of the meeting was down to 5-1s from that combination in Heats 13 and 15.

James Wright continued his successful comeback to the sport with 12+1 at reserve for the Diamonds, who will look to cause a shock aggregate result in the return at Brough Park on Sunday.

Monarchs reserve William Lawson (6) said: “I’m still optimistic. I know I should have scored more, I feel I’m on the pace.

“I had a good race with Matthew (Wethers) and I knew where I want to be, but I’m not quite getting there yet! Josh (Pickering) hasn’t got going as he can but Kye (Thomson) is showing promise.”

Newcastle boss Nigel Hinchliffe said: “Tonight was the first time I’d seen all the lads and it was clear from the off that they were gelled well as a team unit and were determined to keep it tight for our home leg on Sunday, and what a job they did!

“They all put in a massive effort, and what an asset James Wright is at reserve. We cannot wait for the second leg, which I’m sure will be a fantastic match too.”
